  • - Contrast and compare different theories, etc. or see how it integrates specific issues/questions/new research into theories or material used by the student, including from sources provided by the student (outside the OU realm).

  • - Grammar and spelling checks.

  • - Proposing additional materials e.g. articles, videos, and books related to current coursework and interests to improve my understanding of the subject matter.

  • - AI help to reformulate questions in an intelligible way. Example: do not say ‘ self-reflect on what you’ve learned this week’. It means nothing to an autistic participant.

  • - Explaining concepts in a variety of ways to adapt to the learners needs.

  • - I use AI (Chat GPT) almost daily for language learning. For example, to generate a list of verb conjugations or to clarify the meaning of a word or expression.

  • - Reduce word count.

  • - Translate or explain complex text.

Accuracy and Specificity: based upon institutional curated content that not only provides relevant answers but also directs students to specific institutional resources for further learning.22
  • - AI will be useful for speakers of other languages to produce assignments that will be grammatically correct in the English language. For example, I do struggle with writing ‘the’ in correct spaces which confuses reader.

  • - Biggest concern with AI is the accuracy of the responses. ChatGPT frequently returns wrong or irrelevant results.

  • - A good way to be directed to more relevant articles (depending on the level of study).

  • - Help with essays – planning, structure, referencing.

Ethical Use: What and how the use of AI might have implications on individuals, groups, and society.14
  • - AI cannot replace a human teacher/tutor. There will always be issues that AI cannot resolve. If you substitute one with the other, you will lose students and critical thinking skills.

  • - I would hate to think any of your wonderful lecturers would be losing out on work because of AI.

  • - If AI is to be used, then the usage by individual students should be logged and taken into consideration for assessments.

  • - If AI is allowed to be used to support studies it weakens the credibility and worth of the qualification obtained.

  • - The rules what is allowed or not allowed in writing assignments must be made very clear. However, I assume AI being used ‘from outside’ is already a problem.

  • - Do not use student’s data to train without sending an opt-out.

  • - The security of the AI software.

  • - There should be a continual discussion about not just how the OU will or will not use the data, but also if and how any services you use might harvest the data.

  • - As a [blinded discipline] student, I foresee AI being used in the same way as Getty Images—to provide reference graphics. It could also have a role in prototyping.

  • - Helps a student understand where their study fits with current expectations of digital literacy and an ongoing conversation about AI and ethics.
