Abstract

This paper is a self-criticism of the Slovak dubbing translation of Deadpool & Wolverine, with a focus on intertextual references and culture-specific terms. The analysis highlights the necessity of distinguishing between intra- and extra-universe intertextuality, each governed by distinct translation norms. Intra-universe references typically require a foreignizing approach, whereas extra-universe references often necessitate a domesticating strategy. Media constraints, such as dubbing, further influence translation decisions. The study emphasizes the impact of global subcultures on translation strategies within pop-cultural franchises.
