ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Polski Rocznik Muzykologiczny (Polish Musicological Yearbook) is a peer-reviewed, open access scholarly journal specialising in musicology with particular emphasis on Polish music and musical culture within Central European and broader European contexts. Published annually since 2004 by the Musicological Section of the Polish Composers’ Union (Sekcja Muzykologów Związku Kompozytorów Polskich), the journal continues a distinguished tradition established by Adolf Chybiński in 1935.
As a musicological periodical in Poland independent of any single academic institution, the Yearbook serves as an open forum representing the entire Polish music research community. This independence ensures editorial autonomy and enables the journal to feature diverse voices, methodological approaches, and scholarly perspectives from across the field.
Each volume usually includes a thematic section devoted to a specific topic, complemented by contributions submitted outside the annual theme. Recent themes have included “Music and the City” and “Expression in Music,” as well as monographic sections devoted to individual composers or historical periods. These thematic sections are complemented by articles spanning the full spectrum of musicological subdisciplines and historical periods from medieval to contemporary music.

Scope and Research Areas:

The journal covers musicological research from the medieval period to the present, with particular emphasis on Polish music and musical culture in Central European and broader European contexts. Research areas include:
• Historical musicology: composers, performers, musical institutions, archival and source studies, critical editions, reception history, and historiography.
• Music theory and analysis: analytical and theoretical approaches, compositional techniques, and questions of musical structure, expression, and meaning.
• Transnational and comparative studies: musical cultures of Central Europe, migration and cultural exchange, shared heritage, and intercultural relations.
• Interdisciplinary approaches: music in relation to literature, philosophy, politics, sociology, anthropology, urban studies, digital humanities, aesthetics, and criticism.
• Performance, sound, and material culture: historical and contemporary performance practices, interpretative traditions, organology, and sound studies.
• Other areas: medieval and Renaissance music, ethnomusicology and traditional music, the social and political dimensions of music, and twentieth-century and contemporary music.
Publication Format
Annual themes: Focused thematic sections complemented by diverse contributions submitted outside the annual theme. This structure ensures both thematic coherence and scholarly diversity within each volume.

Target Audience
Musicologists, music theorists, cultural historians, composers, performers, music educators, and scholars in related humanities disciplines interested especially in Polish and Central European music.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

In 2024–2025, the journal implemented the project entitled “Increasing the visibility of the Polish Musicological Yearbook in 2024–2025 on the national and international forum”, with support under the “Journals” government programme.
The project was co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland from the Culture Promotion Fund.
The Society of Authors ZAiKS is the Patron of Polski Rocznik Muzykologiczny (Polish Musicological Yearbook).
