Studying While Caring: Student Carers’ Experience in Distance Higher Education

This study examines the persistent awarding gaps between student carers and non-carers, addressing the limited understanding of the factors contributing to these disparities. Focusing on distancelearning student carers (students with unpaid caregiving responsibilities beyond parental care) in the UK, the research explores academic, emotional, financial, and social challenges experienced by this underrepresented group. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research combines 23 qualitative interviews and survey responses from 790 student carers at The Open University (OU) UK. Statistical analyses and pairwise comparisons in Qualtrics, alongside thematic analysis in NVivo highlight how caregiving responsibilities disrupt study routines, negatively affect employment, and contribute to financial instability. Reported levels of social isolation were nearly twice the national average for England. While universities offer support measures such as academic extensions and recorded lectures, these primarily help students to cope rather than address the underlying structural issues. The study recommends introducing of a dedicated Student Carer Advisor, creating of a centralised Carer Hub, improving declaration processes, and enhancing financial and mental health support. Overall, the findings highlight the need for systemic change to improve equity and well-being for student carers in distance learning environments.
