Abstract

This study examines how students’ support services shape academic adjustment and subsequent learning outcomes among distance learners, and also tests whether basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) mediate that process. Using a time-lagged survey of second-year distance undergraduates (N = 818) across 20 study centres, the findings revealed that support services improve learners’ autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and that these motivational pathways, in turn, drive academic adjustment and higher learning outcomes. Motivational needs fully mediate the effect of support services on adjustment, suggesting that service provision alone is insufficient unless it explicitly fosters learners’ motivation. The study recommends that distance-education providers design support interventions that target autonomy, competence, and relatedness to enhance adjustment, engagement, and achievements. Implications for policy and future longitudinal, multi-institutional research are discussed.
