
Affordances and Core Features of Successful Digital Courses Design in Higher Education
Abstract
In recent years, digital education has become a cornerstone of higher education, particularly following the rapid expansion of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The specific objective of this study was to identify the key affordances (critical factors) and essential features for effective digital course design within higher education. A systematic literature review was conducted based on 40 published articles, which serve as sources of empirical support. The findings highlight three primary affordances as most significant for successful digital course design: Structured Learning Environment (SLE), Active Learning and Engagement (AL&E), and Learner-Centered Design (LCD). Additionally, the study underscores the importance of some other affordances i.e., Collaboration and Community Building (C&CB), Authentic Assessments (AA), and Accessibility and Inclusiveness (A&I). These findings support and suggest to educators and course designers to prioritize these affordances to increased student engagement, deeper knowledge retrieval and retention, and learning outcomes. However, the study also identifies key challenges, including technical limitations in learning platforms, scalability constraints, and faculty resistance to adopting or integrating new technologies into their courses. The paper synthesizes these findings to derive actionable implications for enhancing educators’ digital literacy, along with a series of recommendations for policy makers to support effective digital programs in education.
