Abstract
The “Conserving the 1%” project-based learning unit integrates middle school science, music, and computer science to raise awareness about water conservation. In this STEAM-focused unit, students code music and write lyrics in songs they compose to promote conservation efforts. Designed as part of a STEAM teacher training program, the PBL involved collaboration between teachers and program staff to develop and implement innovative STEAM curriculum that incorporated technical tools. The PBL supported the teachers’ and students’ experiences, as it fostered collaboration, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary connections. This paper presents an overview of the “Conserving the 1%” PBL, discussing its implementation, overall challenges and recommendations, and key takeaways shared by the teachers.
