Elio Lugaresi (1926-2015): A founder of modern Sleep Medicine

Abstract

Elio Lugaresi (1926-2015) has been listed among the founders of modern Sleep Medicine and recognized a priority for his studies on; (i). systemic blood pressure, pulmonary arterial pressure and blood gases in sleep apnea; (ii). Restless Legs Syndrome, (iv). the epidemiological relation between snoring, hypertension and heart dysfunction; (v). Fatal Familial Insomnia, (vi). Morvan Syndrome; (vi). Delirium Tremens; (viii). Agrypnia excitata; (ix). Catathrenia (nocturnal groaning); (x). Endozepine stupor; (xi) Startle syndrome; (xii) Hyperekplexia and on many other sleeping disorders.

He created a school of hardworking clinical scientists who utilized at best innovative methods, established leadership and were international recognized. Lugaresi supervised their career, created new chairs in the discipline, hospital centers for sleep in the territory meeting the needs for expert cure and care. His fellows were able to realize his dream to have patients, nursing personnel, technicians and physicians with various expertise working in the same place. Under his leadership the neurology at the medical school of the university of Bologna became a renowned, many of his actors have left a sign of their presence in science.
