Forgotten Vaccine Creators and Epidemic Conquerors: Rudolf Weigl and Waldemar Haffkine

Abstract

Vaccination has led to the eradication or control of numerous infectious diseases, including devastating epidemics such as smallpox, cholera, typhus, and plague. This global success is commonly attributed to pioneering microbiologists such as Louis Pasteur, Edward Jenner, and Robert Koch. However, the equally important contributions of Rudolf Weigl, who developed the first effective typhus vaccine, and Waldemar Haffkine, who created the first cholera and plague vaccines, are not widely recognized. This article revisits their groundbreaking work, which saved millions of lives worldwide, and emphasizes the enduring importance of vaccination amid resurgent anti-vaccine movements that threaten global public health.
