Abstract

Reseña/Review: Contested Nation: The Mapuche, Bandits, and State Formation in Nineteenth-Century Chile (2019), by Pilar M. Herr

Herr refutes many misconceptions about the creation of the Chilean state by giving prominence to the Araucanía in its construction and connecting it to sources from diverse areas of American history. Herr, in a very novel way, expands the historiography on the agency of the Mapuche (and the bandits), by giving them a leading role in the formation of the Republic of Chile.
