
The Requisite Variety of Presence: A Cybernetic Intervention in Knowledge Work’s Attention Crisis
Abstract
This article applies cybernetic principles to address the “hyperactive hive mind workflow” prevalent in contemporary knowledge work, characterized by constant, unstructured digital communication that disrupts cognitive processes and undermines worker autonomy. Field studies reveal workers face interruptions every 15–18 minutes from digital communications, creating significant goal interference. Drawing on Ross Ashby’s concepts of homeostasis and requisite variety and Stafford Beer’s Viable System Model, this analysis identifies how these digital environments create “variety overflow” that overwhelms cognitive variety-absorption mechanisms. As a case study, the article presents “buddylist,” a mobile application designed with cybernetic principles that enables workers to communicate their “digital intentions” across platforms, functioning as a variety absorption mechanism while preserving worker agency. This example serves to suggest that cybernetic frameworks offer valuable tools for understanding and addressing contemporary workplace challenges, informing the development of sociotechnical systems that support both individual cognitive capabilities and organizational effectiveness.
