Temporal Definitions from the Archaeology of Mendoza and San Juan, Argentina: A Dataset Structured for the PeriodO Project

Abstract

This dataset standardizes 93 archaeological periods for Mendoza and San Juan (Argentina), drawing from 32 scholarly sources and indexed in PeriodO a public-domain gazetteer of period definitions across history, art history, and archaeology. Each entry includes a period label, temporal bounds in ISO 8601 format (start/end dates), geographic scope (province) standardized using the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN), and bibliographic source. The dataset is available as a machine-readable CSV for computational analysis and a PDF for human consultation, archived in the National University of Córdoba’s Digital Repository (RDU). It addresses regional gaps by expanding central Argentina’s chronologies, resolving terminological inconsistencies, and enabling interoperable spatiotemporal comparisons. Designed for dynamic updates, it supports community contributions via version-controlled submissions or peer-reviewed extensions.
