Assessing the Challenges and Opportunities of Street Food Experiences in Sri Lanka: Insights from Tourism Stakeholders

Abstract

In the contemporary world, Street food is emerging as one of the most vital areas for the tourism industry. Thus, the street food industry can create a great impact on a tourist destination. However, this industry encounters challenges and opportunities in sustaining the quality of street food experiences for tourists. Hence, this research aimed to explore the Challenges and Opportunities for Street Food Experiences in Sri Lanka. Thus, utilizing the purposive sampling method, 27 structured interviews were conducted, and data was analyzed via content analysis. Hygiene issues, food quality Issues, regulatory issues, collaboration issues, Inadequate infrastructure facilities, and lack of food choices were identified as the challenges. Increasing popularity, availability of ingredients, unique food culture, availability of events, and social media support were identified as opportunities for street food experiences. Conducting regular training and inspections and enhancing collaborations among stakeholders contribute to enhancing street food experiences. Moreover, Future researchers should conduct more studies in developing nations on economic impacts, cultural exchanges, and tourist behaviors related to street foods.
