Abstract

The paper argues for a new kind of metaphors referred to as stereotypical metaphors. They are assumed to be stereotype-based metaphors, in that they arise from stereotypical thoughts speakers within a speech community attach to concepts. They are shown to be instrumental in motivating metaphorical extension of a variety of lexical items. Two case studies are conducted to adduce evidence in support of their descriptive adequacy.
