Abstract

The collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU) serves as a prominent example of interregional cooperation. However, academic research assessing the European Union (EU) and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) cooperation remains limited, studies of trade and sustainable development outcomes have not been systematically examined. This study explores the EU-Lao PDR trade cooperation and sustainable development, analyses the challenges and opportunities, identifies the strategies that could strengthen bilateral relations. Through a comprehensive literature review and the analysis of statistical data to examine the dynamics of the collaboration. The research highlights a trade imbalance, with the EU consistently importing more from Lao PDR over the 2022-2025 period, while key challenges include regulatory compliance, and insufficient integration into global value chains. The study suggests that strengthening cooperation requires closer alignment between market access and support for competitiveness. By integrating policy analysis with statistical data, this study addresses a research gap regarding the impact of EU-ASEAN frameworks on trade and sustainable development in Lao PDR.
