Abstract

This paper presents an overview of challenges for architects in the construction industry in Poland during the process of implementation of European Union sustainability policies, with a focus on the second decade of the 21st century. It is an attempt to draw attention to the difficulties experienced by mature designers facing the necessity for sustainable architectural design, which in turn conditions sustainability of the urban and general built environment. The author discusses the main areas of occurrence of these challenges in the personal development of practicing architects: consciousness and know-how, legal and formal regulations, and practical tools for design. A response to these challenges can be achieved by research methods, cooperation and the transfer of knowledge together with integration within real-estate development processes and rising social awareness in the target group of future users of residential buildings and urban spaces. The paper’s conclusions underline the urgency of systematic support for practicing architects in overcoming key barriers and extending it to the level of academic preparation.
