Abstract

This paper explores the distribution of relative power between China and Japan. The paper looks at the specifics of the relative distribution of power, primarily based on maritime and air assets. Based on this examination, it concludes that, while the current distribution of power does not show a clear disadvantage for Japan, trends in recent years suggest a negative shift for Japan which represents a significant concern, as Japan’s power advantage has been significantly eroded. These trends create a major insecurity for Japan and undermine regional security, as shown in the second half of the paper.
