The Evolution of Medicine and the Changing Communication in the Doctor–Patient Relationship: from Doctor–Priests to Doctor–Wpartners.
Abstract
The history of medicine illustrates how the current model of communication, placing the patient at the centre, was preceded by a paternalistic relationship that had existed for many centuries. The article analyses the ideas proclaimed by the greatest physician-thinkers from ancient times to contemporary medical authorities. Changing the approach to the patient requires supplementing educational programs for medical staff with practical communication courses.
