Design of corner buildings in urban blocks in accordance with local spatial development plans

Corner buildings play a crucial role in urban blocks, often serving as prominent features in the urban space. However, in Poland, spatial development plans frequently overlook the specific conditions of corner plots, instead applying uniform requirements across entire blocks. This approach constrains the ability to design these buildings in harmony with street-facing developments, thereby undermining their significance in the city’s structural composition. This study examined the provisions employed by planners and assessed their impact on the issue under investigation. The research involved a review of local spatial development plans for various urban blocks across cities of different sizes in Poland. The analysis not only confirmed the widespread nature of the problem but also revealed a few interesting approaches that could mitigate or even resolve it. Each example was critically examined to assess its potential implications. One of the identified solutions has the potential to become a model design practice for urban planners.
