The Polish Cartographical Review (Pol. Cartogr. Rev., PCR) is one of the oldest cartographic journals in the world. It has been published since 1969 as a continuation of a periodical that appeared in Lviv for eleven years (1923–1934) under the title Polski Przegląd Kartograficzny (Polish Cartographical Review).
The journal plays an important role in light of the growing significance of spatial information in the contemporary world, as well as the expanding use of maps in many areas of social and economic life. As a result, GIScience, with a focus on cartography and various forms of geovisualisations, is of great importance as we face new challenges posed by technological changes and their consequent cultural implications.
The thematic scope of articles published in the Polish Cartographical Review is very diverse. It reflects the main directions in the development of GIScience, shaped by cartographers, GIS experts and specialists from other scientific disciplines for whom maps constitute either an object of research or a means of presenting results. The journal covers issues related to, i.a. geoinformatics, geovisualisations, cartographic theory, map editing and perception processes, the use of GIS in the study of social and economic phenomena (including remote sensing), as well as the cultural role of maps and the history of cartography.
The Polish Cartographical Review serves as an important forum for the exchange of ideas between academic cartographers and practitioners or users of spatial information in Central Europe, particularly in research related to the practical applications of cartography.
The journal publishes one volume per year in a continuous online publication model. The journal is edited by Polish scientists associated with the Cartographic Division of the Polish Geographical Society. The reviewers include both foreign and Polish scholars, and the consultative body is the international Editorial Advisory Board.
