Aims and scope
The Journal of Military Studies (JMS) is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary journal publishing original research articles in selected areas of military studies. The Journal is maintained by The Finnish Society of Military Sciences and closely affiliated with The Finnish National Defence University.
Within military studies, the Journal of Military Studies is oriented towards the social sciences and humanities. Its core areas include operational art and tactics, strategic and security studies, military history, and military sociology, civil-military relations, military organisation and leadership, and other analytically rigorous approaches to war, armed forces, and the use of military power.
The journal particularly welcomes submissions that advance scholarly understanding of military affairs through conceptual, historical, strategic, organisational, political, or doctrinal analysis. Contributions grounded in other fields of military studies, including military technology and other technical domains, may also be considered when they are clearly linked to broader military, strategic, operational, or societal questions.
In geographical terms, the JMS encourages submissions addressing Europe, the Nordic and Baltic Region, and the Arctic, while also welcoming manuscripts with a broader, international or comparative scope.
The articles are subjected to a double-blind review and any suggestions or criticism is strictly constructive so as to benefit the author and assist them in improving their work. The journal does not have article processing charges (APCs) nor article submission charges.
