
Hydrogen Systems Risk and Reliability Challenges, Priorities, and Workshop Insights
Abstract
This paper summarizes the key insights and priorities from the 2024 Hydrogen Systems Risk and Reliability Workshop organized by the University of Maryland’s Center for Risk and Reliability in College Park, Maryland. The workshop identified hydrogen systems reliability research gaps and delineated the role of government, national laboratories, industry, and academic institutions in developing hydrogen technologies to address climate change and support the transition to clean energy solutions. A consortium was established to address the need for coordinating precompetitive research and development activities to advance a sustainable and reliable hydrogen infrastructure. The identified priorities include creating databases and mechanisms to share operational data for risk and reliability analyses; reducing the impact of maintenance costs and low spare parts availability on facility downtime; expanding hydrogen equipment testing capabilities at the component and system levels; developing safety codes, standards, and test requirements for hydrogen systems; and educating, training, and developing the hydrogen engineering workforce.
