The 1909–1910 Gebelein Manuscript Inventory (Inventario Manoscritto): Archival Data from the M.A.I. Excavations
Abstract
This dataset presents a digital edition of the Inventario manoscritto (Manuscript inventory), a handwritten list documenting 1906 artefacts transferred to the Museo Egizio in Turin following the 1909–1910 excavation season conducted at Gebelein, Upper Egypt, by the Missione Archeologica Italiana under the direction of Ernesto Schiaparelli. The dataset, available in Excel and CSV formats through the RADOGOST repository, contains a transcription of the manuscript, an English translation, Collective Entry identifiers, a comparison with the current state of the museum collection, as recorded in the SiME (Sistema Informatico del Museo Egizio) database, editorial comments, and a codebook of abbreviations. By identifying missing objects and documenting collection history, the dataset supports provenance research, museum documentation, and studies of early twentieth-century archaeological practice. It also provides unique information on the archaeological context of the Gebelein material, much of which remains largely unknown to researchers.
