Abstract

The Atlas of Hillforts of Britain and Ireland is a large open dataset published online for reuse and reinterpretation. This data is large and complex, making it challenging to manipulate, especially in a discipline where a lack of data literacy skills is identified as limiting data reuse (Garstki 2022; Huvila 2016). To encourage validation, reinterpretation and reuse, the research presented in this paper systematically analyses maps and plots all the fields in the Hillforts Atlas data. It provides context and insight into the spread, distribution, density, and bias in the data, and explores regional groupings and how the Atlas data can be used to create regional classifications. This research provides a companion to the Atlas and presents a code resource that can be repurposed for a range of analyses into different monument types.
