Abstract
Background: In complex times, the simplest solutions are often the most effective. By sharing simple ideas that we have found to work well in engaging and partnering with patients and families, we aim to guide health and social services leaders on their partnership journeys. Partnering with people with lived experience directly is an excellent example of integrated care in organizational practices and people powered health in action. While People-Centred Care (PCC) is gaining ground across the country, as an established and implemented concept, it is currently in early stages. It is time to explore what authentic engagement means and understand what a culture of a patient engagement capable environment looks like so we can all work together to improve the quality and safety of care. Audience:Anyone attending this conference can benefit from our workshop as PCC is a critical aspect in Integrated Care and we all play a role. PCC includes: patients, families, staff, governing bodies, healthcare leaders, etc.
Approach: This workshop will consist of a presentation and an interactive reflection session to guide participants on their journey of integrating people with lived experience into organizational practices. Written with patients and families, the goal of this workshop is to allow participants to gain a greater understanding of authentic engagement and the impact of including those with lived experience into organizational practices.During the workshop presenters will clarify how different way of engagement can look and share how a multitude of approaches to patient engagement are acceptable and important (5 minutes). Following this presentation, attendees will learn, reflect, and discuss how people with lived experience are currently integrated into organizations through an interactive session. This will include sharing how we incorporate patient partners into all aspects of our organization and our practices at AC/HSO and allow attendees to reflect on how their organizations currently engage those with lived experience (5 minutes). Through collaborative discussion, attendees will define their experiences with engagement, their understanding of partnership (including the challenges, barriers, opportunities and solutions) (20 minutes), then share their approach to supporting a culture of patient engagement with the rest of the attendees (5 minutes). After a quick break (5 minutes - hour mark), presenters will discuss the concepts of PCC and how this is a critical aspect of authentic engagement (5 minutes). Attendees will learn what they need to think about before engaging a patient and/or family member to ensure capacity as a patient engagement capable environment and examine models that will assist with this process. Additionally, we will share some of the tools that AC/HSO has created to assist organizations on their PCC journey such as our PCC Program and Global Workforce Survey. In a solutions-focused approach, attendees will reflect on, and discuss, their current engagement levels and solutions on how they can improve PCC within their organizational practices based on the shared models (0 minutes). By the end of the session, presenters will share key takeaways (5 minutes) and attendees will leave with a better understanding of the principles for authentic engagement, including strategies that they can use to help ensure those with lived experience are integrated as an integral part of the team into organizational practices. (Total run time - 90 minutes)
