Abstract

In today’s complex healthcare landscape, we often focus on fixing problems reactively—tackling challenges as they arise without considering their broader context. But what if we flipped this approach? What if we proactively addressed challenges by designing solutions with, rather than for, those who experience them every day?

This hands-on workshop introduces a dynamic, human-centered approach to addressing healthcare challenges that blends empathy, curiosity, and a holistic perspective. Participants will learn how to move beyond traditional methodologies to uncover deep insights about human behavior, operational realities, and lived experiences. By integrating these perspectives, healthcare teams can co-create solutions that improve not only efficiency but also the lived experiences of patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

Through interactive activities and real-world case studies, participants will engage in a practical exploration of design tools and strategies that elevate problem-solving in healthcare. The session will empower participants to approach challenges with a proactive and inclusive mindset, equipping them to inspire meaningful, lasting change in their own organizations.

What to Expect:

Participants will actively engage in small-group exercises designed to apply new skills in real-world scenarios. The session will balance foundational principles with hands-on practice, ensuring attendees leave with tangible tools to implement immediately. Highlights include:

Empathy in Action: Learn how to observe with curiosity, conduct qualitative interviews, and map patient and clinician experiences to uncover hidden pain points and opportunities.

Creating Personas and Maps: Develop empathy and journey maps to understand stakeholder perspectives and identify actionable solutions that address both operational and human needs.

Co-Creation with Stakeholders: Explore strategies for collaborating with clinicians, patients, and families to ensure solutions are sustainable, relevant, and deeply rooted in real-world challenges.

From Insight to Innovation: Practice bridging the gap between quantitative data and qualitative insights to design holistic, impactful interventions.

Key Takeaways:

A fresh perspective on healthcare challenges, shifting from problem identification to proactive solution design.

The value of engaging end users—including clinicians, patients, and those with lived experience—throughout the design process.

Practical tools for implementing human-centered design in healthcare, including interviewing, journey mapping, and co-creation strategies.

Inspiration from real-world examples showcasing the transformative power of empathy-driven approaches in hospital settings.

Participants will leave the workshop with a toolkit of skills and methodologies to approach challenges differently, fostering collaboration and innovation at their organizations. They will gain confidence to experiment with new approaches that not only improve efficiency and safety but also address the complex, human side of healthcare.

Join us for an inspiring and interactive session designed to reimagine how we approach change in healthcare—together with patients, families, and providers.
