Abstract
Summary: The aim is to let participants experience the benefits of an interprofessional intake/initial contact. Participants of the workshop will receive a first-hand account of the development of an interprofessional intake for potential patients/clients at the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Utrecht Clinics. During the workshop, we will simulate interprofessional intakes, giving participants the opportunity to participate and experience being part of an interprofessional intake.
The UAS-Utrecht Clinics are part of institute for (allied) healthcare. In these clinics, students advise and treat people under supervision of faculty staff. A number of allied health professions have a place in the clinics: skin therapy, oral care, dental prosthetics, speech and language therapy, orthoptics and optometry. The ambition for next year is to transform the clinics into an interprofessional center for health and wellbeing, including additional professions: pharmacy, management in healthcare, physiotherapy, nursing, and above all social work and arts therapy.
Background: To address increasing need for a more integral approach due to increasing complexity in needs, care and treatment of clients, and to prepare students to work in an interprofessional work environment, we started a pilot to develop an interprofessional intake, in which students from both health and social care take part.
Aims and objectives: The aim of the workshop is to give both health & social care professionals as well as educators an overview of our pilot, the rationale behind it, and our experience so far including successes and challenges.
Next, we will give participants the opportunity to witness and/or take part in a simulated intake, to experience how this process works, and what the added value for student, educator/professional and client can be. We will use input from this workshop to further develop our project.
Target audience: The target audience for this workshop consists of clients, students, educators and professionals in health and social care.
Facilitators / speakers (names and roles):
Mirjam Gademan MA,care professional in simulated intake.
Neel de Haan MSW, client in simulated intake.
Suzanne Janssen MEd, professional in simulated intake.
Dr. Janna Bruijning, presenter
Dr. Ruben van Zelm, moderator
Format:
Introduction and background of the interprofessional intake – 15'
Intake simulation: using the same three steps used during the pilot, we will perform an intake simulation – 30':
1.Introduction of the case by workshop facilitator
2.Round table discussion, including all workshop participants, to prepare the intake
3.Intake of simulation client by two volunteers from the audience or two lecturers in case there are no volunteers in the audience – in this case, the audience will be invited to participate indirectly (suggesting questions or topics to the lecturers)
Debriefing: how did the intake go, tops, tips, added value for students, educators/professionals and clients? – 20'
Presentation of experience and lessons learned from our pilot – 10'
Evaluation, wrap-up and Q&A – 10'
Key learnings/Take away:
- A practical example of setting up an interprofessional intake in professional education
- A chance to experience a (simulated) interprofessional intake, and to take part in it
