Abstract
Health care is challenged by several development: ageing and multimorbidity, staff shortages, technological improvements and increased complexity with higher burnout rates and challenges for work/life balance. Consequently, future health care providers and staff should be equipped to deal with these challenges and thus they should be prepared during their education. PHM and IC are part of national and international policy answers towards these challenges. This integrated population and person oriented way of thinking and acting is not yet implemented within health and care and should be stimulated actively through the education of new competences.
As PHM is an important leverage for Integrated Care, future workforce that acts within integrated care settings should be supported with PHM and IC competences.
At Leiden University we developed a brand new masters program on population health management fulfilling this gap in the future workforce. This masters program educates students and young professionals in an intensive two year program based on the principles of transformative learning as the Lancet Commission formulated in 2010 (Frenk et al). The program is built upon 4 pillars: health/medicine, data, governance and behavior and runs now for two years.
One of the foci of this program is the international orientation which is now being fulfilled through some international examples and staff. However, for a real international orientation is a full international program a better solution. To enhance the understanding of PHM in the context of Integrated Care worldwide, it is even more favorable to have joint courses and classrooms worldwide. One of the possibilities is to set up an international mastersprogram that will run simultaneously at different locations worldwide. A first program run in Australia/New Zealand and Europe (Netherlands).
In this workshop we would like to challenge this possibility by discussing the following questions with the participants of the conference:
1.Why: Does a shared educational socialization on different continents contribute to a shared vision on PHM in the context of Integrated Care?
2.What: What are your thoughts and opinions about a cross continental curriculum on PHM for Integrated Care?
3.What are the specificities we have to consider in case of a cross continental curriculum?
4.Who: Is a combination of Leiden University and University of Sydney appropriate or do you consider alternative combinations?
With an interactive learning experience, the audience is challenged through opinions by the app. Based on the life answers, a debate will yield the pros and cons of the various questions.
