Abstract

On a memorable day at a Title 1 Elementary School in Southern California, 22 students from 4th grade, 5th grade, and Special Day Classes participated in a hands-on oceanography workshop. Led by the USC Joint Educational Project (JEP) STEM staff and USC ocean researchers, the event focused on the role of iron in marine ecosystems. Supported by the National Science Foundation, the workshop featured four interactive stations—Geotracing Instruments, Iron in the Ocean, Glacier Melt, and Iron Cores—each designed to make complex ocean science accessible and engaging for young learners. This initiative exemplifies the power of community partnerships in fostering STEM curiosity and broadening participation for all types of learners.
