Abstract

Old-glacial areas are considered to be at low risk of water erosion. The aim of the study was to understand the topographic and lithological conditions of soil water erosion, using the edge zone of the Narew River valley near Łomża as an example. One of the larger dry valleys dissecting the Narew River valley edge, with a catchment area of 1.25 km², was selected for study. The thickness of the colluvial (deluvial) cover was determined in three transects across the valley. The following topsoil properties were analyzed: texture, organic matter content and soil erodibility factor K. The study revealed catenary variability of the analyzed parameters, determined by the origin of landforms and denudation processes. The K-factor values indicate varying susceptibility of soils to locally significant water erosion, which is important for proper agricultural management of the catchment.
