Abstract

This article examines the impact of religiously motivated incidents and communal clashes on peacebuilding efforts in Sri Lanka between 2009 and 2019. Although the civil war officially ended in 2009, the post-war decade witnessed a rise in religious tensions, particularly targeting Muslim and Christian minorities. Key incidents such as the Aluthgama riots (2014), Digana violence (2018), and the Easter Sunday attacks (2019) illustrate how unresolved religious and ethnic grievances continue to shape societal dynamics. The main objective of this study is to identify how religiously motivated violence has influenced post-war reconciliation and interfaith relations, and to assess the contribution of religious and political actors in either aggravating or mitigating these tensions. This study revealed the background factors of these clashes, the role of religious and political actors towards these attacks, and the broader implications for national reconciliation. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative approach, integrating both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were collected through key informant interviews with religious leaders, community representatives, and policymakers, while secondary data included academic literature, reports, and media analyses. The study employed the case study method and content analysis to examine patterns, narratives, and socio-political contexts of selected incidents.
