Abstract
The Tipiṭaka presents extensive analyses on the doctrine of the senses (indriya), a distinctive teaching within Buddhism. The term indriya denotes that which governs or exercises control over associated dhammas. Across the canonical texts, various definitions of sensory dhammas are offered, with the Abhidhamma Piṭaka providing the most systematic exposition. The Buddhist understanding of the senses arises in multiple structural contexts, emphasizing both their functional and subjective diversity. Traditionally, the five physical senses are classified in two main ways, and from a psychological standpoint, they are interpreted as modes of cognition. Within the framework of Paṭiccasamuppāda, the individual (satta) is defined through attachment to the five aggregates (pañcakkhandha): form, feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness. In addition to these, five spiritual faculties—faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom—are also designated as indriyas. The Buddha described them as parāpara, signifying their function in differentiating higher and lower spiritual states. Thus, indriya embodies paropariyatta, a principle influencing both worldly and transcendental dimensions of existence. Buddhism, while rejecting mere worldliness, advocates the cultivation of indriya for moral and spiritual development. In the Abhidhamma, this doctrine guides the formation of a Dhamma-oriented society and the realization of true knowledge (yathābhūta-ñāṇadassana). Ultimately, comprehension of the indriya doctrine leads to insight into the aggregates and the attainment of Nibbāna.
