Abstract

The ultimate purpose of Buddhism is to convince the liberation for the beings freed from the circle of birth which is suffering. Buddhism has given the priority to investigate the knowledge to accomplish the Nibbāna. The Indian thinkers had followed three ways to accomplish the knowledge identified as traditionalist, rationalist, and empiricist. The ones who followed the path of listening to achieve knowledge are known as traditionalists. The ones who followed the path of logic to achieve knowledge are known as rationalists. The empiricists are known as the ones who follow the sensory perception to achieve knowledge. Buddhism also remarks on the sensory perception to achieve knowledge. Buddhism paves the way to achieve knowledge through empiricism and the perception is twofold: sensory perception and extra sensory perception.
The research problem is to investigate the characteristics of sensory perception in Buddhism through the discoursed Madhupiṇḍika Sutta. The research methodology is referred to as the bibliography research method, and using the primary and secondary sources collecting and analyzing the data. According to the Madhupiṇḍika Sutta, dependent on the eye & forms, eye consciousness arises. Subsequently, the contact, feeling, perception, thinking and papañca arises. It is essential to have without impairment of functions to raise the sensory perception. Buddhism asserts that reality cannot be achieved through sensory perception because the person grasps the truth as false and false as truth. Through sensory perception, a person cannot achieve the ultimate truth. This is the nature of sensory perception.
