The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) has very generously conferred upon me, an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters for my “valuable contributions to the field of distance education regionally and internationally”. This is a tremendous honour for which I am very grateful. It is therefore imperative that I take this opportunity to reflect on the field of distance education, its journey during my lifetime and where it might go in the future.
