“අඬහැරය“ හා බැඳුණු සමාජ වටිනාකම් පිළිබඳ අධ්‍යයනයක් A study of the social values associated with “ADAHARAYA”

Farming is the main livelihood of the old Sinhalese Society. It was based on the cow and can be considered as the beginning of interactives with the animals. As civilized, man gradually turn to the cultivation of crops. The cow was used as a supporter in the paddy field and the threshing floor as well. The farmer used a singing method which was with a wide range of voices to obey the cow was called “Andaheraya”. In the past Sinhalese culture the cow was mainly driven by this Andaheraya without using equipment’s. It may caused by the reluctance of the farmer who didn’t hurt the cow which supplies him with rice. Therefore the purpose of this research is to examine how Sinhala folk social values such at the love of humans towards animals, humanity and mutual understanding and harmony between humans and animals are depicted in Andaheraya. The research problem here is to explore whether there is any other social value and substance that overcome the expectation of submissiveness. For that, authentic scholars opinions, academic texts and research theses are associated as sources. From this it can be observed that a transaction between man and animal was done habitually with mutual understanding, although the chanting was used as a song with a wide rang of voice to wake a beast obey.
