
Impact of Working Environment of Quantity Surveyors on the Performance in the Sri Lankan Construction Industry

Abstract
Quantity surveyors working environment is one of the areas that has to focused on project performance. The current study is proposing for ascertain the impact of working environment of quantity surveyors on the performance of Construction industry in Sri Lanka. The specific objectives are to: Priorities factors affecting to working environment, recognized relationship between the working environment of quantity surveyor’s and project performance and identify issues in working environment and solutions for them. Work environment of Quantity surveyors comprise with work condition, Nature of project and Organization structure. The study was directed by structured questionnaire and interview survey, which were particularly considered on research. The responses were composed via e-mail and interviews. There were 42 responses from quantity surveyors and 10 interviews from project managers, Directors and chief Quantity surveyors which, were randomly chosen. These statistical data were analysed by correlation and regression approaches, using SPSS and interviews were evaluated by content analysis method. The conclusions showed that the working environment of quantity surveyors has significant relationship with performance of construction project. Consequently, there are solutions to escalate the performance of construction industry. The communication skills, teamwork, motivation and leadership, in the mentioned chronological order, effect for the project productivity. The sample size is small comparatively to the industry and low responses rate. Non- representing of client’s quantity surveyors in the sample. The responses are scrutinized with the current economic condition in Sri Lanka. The findings and recommendations that were gained from this study can be applied for escalation the performance of construction projects in Sri Lanka.
