The Disposable Nature: The Case of Ecocide and Corporate Accountability

Abstract

According to the Rome Statute there are four core international crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression. However, there is another widespread crime which deserves the same amount of attention: the crime of ecocide. Ecocide in inextricably linked with corporate activity. This article looks into the widespread destruction of the natural environment, or ecocide, by corporations and researches if and how they can be held accountable under international law. It furthermore addresses if ecocide should be adopted as an International Crime.
