Abstract

Balloon soundings of aerosols up to 15 km in height were carried out in 1983 at Syowa Station (69°00’S. 39°35’E), Antarctica. The vertical distribution of the concentration and size distribution of Mie particles (diameter larger than 0.3 μm) was obtained on 3 June and on 16 October. The vertical distribution of the concentration of Aitken particles (diameter larger than 0.004 μm) was obtained on 17 October. This paper gives a review of the findings obtained by these soundings and discusses the significance of these findings in aerosol processes in the antarctic atmosphere.
