Open Access
|Oct 2026

Abstract

This subsequent article introduces a special issue dedicated to exploring current African maritime governance structures and to investigating security threats, governance gaps, and regional responses in three selected African coastal regions: the Gulf of Guinea, Southern Africa, and the Horn of Africa. The article roughly sketches how the issue offers insights for academics, policymakers, and practitioners on strengthening Africa’s maritime governance, ensuring sustainable resource use, and addressing security vulnerabilities amid shifting geopolitical landscapes. It also presents the five principal articles contained within the Special Issue.
