Abstract

In light of rising defence spending and armed conflicts, military emissions and their impact on international climate change mitigation efforts are under increased scrutiny. However, debates suffer from a lack of conceptual clarity, limited understanding of the size and structure of military emissions and of the role of the international climate regime. The taken for granted conflict between climate and defence policy goals has been moderated over recent years, as militaries begin to take first steps towards decarbonisation. Green defence technologies in particular offer possibilities to align the climate and defence agendas to a considerable degree.
