Abstract

The new US administration is shifting its consumer protection policy from regulatory measures to market mechanisms. In particular, price transparency and data protection are becoming less important. Drawing on findings from the academic literature, this article discusses the implications of these developments. It argues that the risks associated with hidden fees and privacy intrusions are likely to increase due to the policy shift. In the long run, households could face greater financial burdens, undermining the administration’s stated objectives.
