Restaurování bronzového jezdeckého pomníku Jana Žižky z trocnova v Praze na Vítkovì / Restoration of the bronze Jan Zizka equestrian statue on the Vítkov Hill in Prague

Abstract

The monumental statue of the Hussite commander JanZizka of Trocnov on the Vítkov Hill in Prague was sculpted byBohumil Kafka in the years 1928-1937 and casted in bronzeby Václav Mašek in 1950. The statute underwent a comprehensiverestoration in years 2010-2011. The restoration surveycomprised the analysis of bronze, measurements of thicknessesin various locations of the statue, patina and corrosion layersanalyses and the assessment of corrosion damage suffered bybronze, the internal steel structure and the reinforced concretestructure. The repaired surface was treated with artifi cial patinaand conserved with bee wax.
