Large protected areas in Svalbard. Their boundaries from 1973 are singed with the red dotted line, their current extent is hachured. In 2004, the extent of territorial water was widened from 4 to 12 nautical miles, enlarging the protected areas.Elaborated on the basis of: Ministry of Environment 1984, Protected areas in Svalbard 2010.National parks established in 1973: 1 – Nordvest-Spitsbergen, 2 – Forlandet, 3 – Sør-Spitsbergen. Nature reserves established in 1973: 4 – Nordaust-Svalbard, 5 – Søraust-Svalbard. National parks established in 2003–2005: 6 – Nordenskiöld Land, 7 – Sassen-Bünsow, 8 – Nordre Isfjorden, 9 – Indre Wijdefjorden.
