Abstract

The digital transformation of organizations has fundamentally reshaped how quality is defined, measured, and continuously improved, especially in knowledge-based organizations like information technology companies, consulting firms, research and development centers. This paper shows how digital technologies can be implemented in quality management systems to support better decision making, better transparency, and to ensure that continuous learning exists in these organizations. The study is theoretical and develops a perspective based on the existing literature on digitalization, quality management, and knowledge-based value creation. First clarifies the specific characteristics of knowledge-based organizations and the implications these characteristics have for quality management. Then it reviews how digital tools such as data analytics platforms, collaborative platforms and workflow management systems applications can support planning, control, and improvement of quality in knowledge-based processes. The paper also discusses the main drivers and barriers for the digitalization of quality management. With a focus on organizational culture, employee competences, and leadership orientation. The paper proposes a framework that includes these ingredients: digital technologies, knowledge processes, and quality outcomes in knowledge-based organizations. The contribution of this work are based in integrating perspectives from digital transformation, knowledge management, and quality management into a coherent model that can guide both researchers and practitioners in designing more effective quality management systems in the digital age.
