Open Access
|Jun 2026

Abstract

From the underground clubs of post-communist Bucharest to festival stages across Europe, Romanian minimal techno, known as Rominimal, has become one of Eastern Europe’s most distinctive cultural exports. This article charts its rise from electroacoustic experimentation in the communist era to global recognition, documenting the key venues, artists, and platforms that shaped the genre, as well as the community dynamics that sustained it through the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges it has faced in its home country in recent years.
