Influence of surface state of high alloyed creep resistant steels on their oxidation resistance

Abstract

The conditions of application of highly alloyed austenitic steels can be distinguished according to the character and mechanism of formation of the protective layer, which prevents them from more intensive corrosion. When the protective passive layer forms as a result of the low-temperature oxidation mechanism (i.e. up to the temperatures of 200-300 °C), the steels have a character of stainless materials. At higher application temperatures, when the protective oxidic layer has a character of a high-temperature oxide (at temperatures excee- -ding 300°C), the steels are used as heat-resistant materials. Achieving optimal corrosion resistance in both application areas depends on the state of the surface - but in different ways. The decisive impacts of the surface state are discussed in the article.
