From Outer Space to Earth – Resilience Management in Turkey'S Natural Disaster of 2023

Abstract

In recent years, natural disasters have become more frequent and severe, causing significant damage to infrastructure, economy, and society. To enhance societal resilience to these events, the usage of space technology has become increasingly important. This article aims to explore the role of space technology in enhancing societal resilience to natural disasters, using the case of the 2023 natural disaster in Turkey. First, the article discusses the use of space technology in disaster monitoring, early warning systems, search and rescue operations, and damage assessment. Secondly, the article looks at the case of the recent earthquake in Turkey and attempts to reveal how Turksat satellite system has been used. The article concludes that space technology can play a crucial role in enhancing societal resilience to natural disasters.
