A Conceptual Model for Multifunctional Public Spaces with Blue-Green Infrastructure in Resilient Cities
Abstract
Drawing on a series of multifaceted studies of urban public spaces, the author developed a conceptual model for designing multifunctional public spaces based on blue-green infrastructure (BGI). The model is intended to support interdisciplinary stakeholder teams in strategically planning contemporary cities. The study adopts a Research by Design (RbD) approach, understood as using design as a means of inquiry and knowledge generation in spatial research. The findings indicate a continuing need for research on how to create welcoming, inclusive and healthy urban landscapes. Urban public space can serve as a testing ground for pilot solutions whose benefits may extend to the wider city.
