Determination of Smoke Constituents in the Mainstream of Pipe Tobacco Smoke by Means of a New Pipe Smoking Machine / Bestimmung von Komponenten im Rauch von Pfeifentabak mit Hilfe einer neuen Pfeifenabrauchmaschine
Abstract
By means of a new smoking machine constructed for 6 pipes smoke constituents of the mainstream of pipe tobacco smoke are determinable. The smoking machine, general conditions and data of the machine are described. Smoking constituent analysis includes nicotine, tar, humectants, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane. The methods are listed. The results show that in comparison to cigarettes pipe tobacco smoke contains higher amounts of nicotine and more tar. The amount of humectants in pipe smoke is higher than in cigarette smoke referring to equal concentrations in both tobaccos. The concentration in CO2, CO and CH4 is lower. Depending on the applied conditions puff number with pipe tobacco is 10 times higher than with cigarettes, which means that more air is involved during combustion of tobacco.
