Effect of ultrasonic oscillation in combination with laser microsurgery on chronic periapical periodontitis

Abstract

Introduction

We aimed to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic oscillation in combination with laser microsurgery on chronic periapical periodontitis.

Materials and Methods

Ninety patients with chronic periapical periodontitis admitted from January 2020 to March 2023 were divided into a control group (n=45) and a treatment group (n=45) using a random number table. The control group was treated with laser microsurgery, while the treatment group was given ultrasonic oscillation plus laser microsurgery.

Results

At 4 weeks and 8 weeks after treatment, the visual analogue scale (VAS) score significantly declined, while the mean gray value (MGV) significantly rose in both groups (P<0.05). The treatment group had a lower VAS score and a higher MGV than those of the control group at 4 weeks after treatment (P<0.05). Old-periapical index (O-PAI) of the treatment group was lower after treatment than that before treatment, and it was lower at 8 weeks after treatment than that of the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of serum calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, their levels declined in both groups, and they were lower in the treatment group than those in the control group (P<0.05).

Conclusions

Ultrasonic oscillation plus laser microsurgery can treat chronic periapical periodontitis effectively and safely, relieve pain and inflammatory response.
